Promax Lean is a protein-rich shake, designed to support your goals for
a defined physique. Every serving is low in fat and contains a source of
specially selected B-vitamins and L-carnitine along with 30 g of our highquality
protein formula to maintain lean muscle and support your lean
muscle defi nition goals.
Promax Lean is high in B-vitamins which are involved in fat, protein and
carbohydrate metabolism. Based on the scientific research available,
those who exercise more regularly may have a greater requirement for
B-vitamins than the general population (Woolf and Manore. 2006).
L-carnitine is a non essential amino acid which is naturally produced in
the body and can also be obtained through the consumption of meat and
dairy products. Around 95 % of the body’s carnitine stores exist within
skeletal muscle (Burke et al. 2009). L-carnitine is essential for energy
production and fat metabolism, specifi cally L-carnitine is responsible for
transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria; the central powerhouse
of the cell that produces energy. A recent study by Wall et al (2011),
showed an association between L-carnitine supplementation, glycogen
sparing and improved performance during low intensity exercise. The
improvement in performance was attributed to the enhanced use of fatty
acids as a fuel during exercise, ultimately sparing glycogen.
Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant which acts on the central nervous
system. It is consumed by many people in coffee, tea, cola and energy drinks.
Caffeine has been shown to be ergogenic to sports performance. In particular, it
has been shown to increase alertness and concentration and improve mental
focus during exercise, as well as reducing the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
(Goldstein et al. 2010, Doherty and Smith. 2005). In essence, caffeine helps
the exercising individual to maintain focus throughout their session as well as
making it ‘feel’ easier, reducing their perception of fatigue. This could motivate
individuals to exercise for longer and exert more effort, therefore helping to
burn more calories. A dose of greater than 75 mg of caffeine has been shown to
increase attention and alertness, whereas higher amounts of up to 3 – 6 mg/kg
of body weight has been shown to improve endurance performance (Goldstein
et al. 2010). More recently, a positive association between caffeine ingestion
and improved muscle performance during resistance training in strength
trained individuals was shown (Duncan et al. 2014), with more research
continuing in this area. Each Promax Lean serving contains around 80 mg of
caffeine, perfect before or after a workout or as part of a snack.
The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are leucine, isoleucine, and valine,
which are present in many protein rich foods such as dairy, meat, fi sh and
eggs. BCAAs are considered essential amino acids, because the human body
cannot make them and therefore it is necessary that they are consumed
from the diet. BCAAs and in particular leucine, have been shown to activate
muscle signalling pathways that stimulate muscle protein synthesis during
the recovery period post exercise (Blomstrand et al. 2006).
